Thank You from BULK Space
Dear Friends, Supporters, and BULK Space Community,
As we reflect on 2024, we are filled with immense gratitude for the artists, collaborators, program participants, and supporters who made last year one to remember. At BULK Space, we are committed to creating a space where experimentation, accessibility, and collaboration thrive. Our commitment lies in supporting artists' growth and exploration through transformative initiatives, empowering them to make a lasting impact on our communities and beyond.
Our program year highlights include the opening of our Media Lab—a hub for technological experimentation located in the North End of Detroit made possible through the generous support of the Knight Foundation and Kresge Innovative Projects Detroit Plus. With over 24 programs, the lab encouraged us to extend our reach and through programs taking place at the lab and off site, we reached over 500+ attendees. Additionally, we were energized by our partnership with MdW (pronounced MidWay) that allows us to steward a network of artist-run spaces across the region, impacting hundreds of programmers and extending our reach beyond Detroit. Lastly, our presence at numerous book fairs including Philadelphia, New York City, Pittsburgh amongst others allowed us to bolster our BULK publications initiative that supports the work of emerging artists through limited edition prints, zines, and books. We are very thankful to the Seed and Bloom Fellowship which was awarded to our Co-Director jes allie to further support the work we are doing at BULK Space.
These are just a handful of examples of how BULK was able to grow in 2024. Our 2024 impact report details our growth and illuminates the importance of supporters like you.
As we move into 2025 we are pleased to share that we are only furthering our reach by launching a membership program that invites local communities to gain access to affordable equipment rentals, skills building training and personalized resources. This is of course in addition to continuing our work through workshops, programs, visiting artist series, publications and more.
None of this would have been possible without all of you and we look forward to growing with you in 2025. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in fostering a vibrant community where marginalized artists in Detroit can thrive. We invite you to continue this journey with us. Your engagement, whether through attending events, spreading the word, or contributing resources, ensures that BULK Space remains a dynamic network for artists, curators, and arts enthusiasts.
Together, let's champion creativity, diversity, and innovation in Detroit's cultural landscape.

Eleanor Oakes is an artist, educator, and mother living in Detroit, MI. Her ongoing project, “love’s labor,” uses breastmilk in a historical photographic process to create contemporary portraits of early motherhood that insert a feminist narrative into art history while reflecting on nourishment, bodily memory as transferred through ancestry, and society’s reliance on the unsupported labor of parenting.
